Week 1 Day 1 : EXPLORER

Greetings. I know you might think it's weird getting a Detroit CRU e-mail and it's not from Malissa, but hold on tight. You're riding a new bus and now I'm the driver.

Here's the plan. We're all doing this crazy thing called Cojourners. It's coming alongside peoples' spiritual journeys and pointing them to Christ. For some of you, it might be easy, for some it might be difficult, some of you don't care, and some of you are desperate for your friends to come to know Christ. You are all on your own journeys, and that's cool. I will be your daily e-mail pal to hopefully encourage you and motivate you to pursue making a difference for Christ.

For most of you, there was a person, or people, who God used to lead you to become a follower of Christ. Now you can play that role in someone else's life.

So the first week (this week) we'll play the role of EXPLORER!

Tonight I plan to run down my list of top ten explorers.

10. Hernando de Soto: I'm not a huge fan of this guy, but I mention him here because he's George Costanza's favorite explorer. He discovered the Mississippi River in 1540, but like Jerry said, "someone would've found that anyway."

9. Hannu: He didn't really do much cool, but was the very first known explorer. How about 2750 B.C.? Thousands of years before anybody else on this list.

8. Jacques Cousteau: underwater explorer and innovator. Everyone under the water wants to be like him. End of story.

7. Ferdinand Magellan: This is Jerry Seinfeld's favorite explorer. He was the first to sail around the world. He also named the Pacific Ocean, which just so happens to be my favorite ocean. When I die, I want my ashes scattered across this beautiful body of water.

6. Lewis and Clark. Planned to drive their Buicks from St. Louis to Oregon and back. Popped a tire after about a mile and then walked the rest of the way.

5. Edmund Hillary: He was the first to climb Mount Everest, which is the tallest mountain in the world. He did it in 1953.

4. Henry (Indiana) Jones: He rescued kids in India from a temple of Doom, he discovered the ark of the covenant, and the holy grail.

3. Eric the Red and Leif Eriksson: I mention these guys together because they're father and son. In any case, they're stinking vikings and that's cool. I especially love they're long, flowing, blonde hair. What did they do? Who cares, they're stinking vikings!

2. Neil Armstrong: (Space explorer) This guy was the first person on the moon. July 20, 1969. He was also, and more importantly, a Purdue graduate. His favorite two sayings of all time are, "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." and "Go Boilers!"

1. David Livingstone. Explorer and also a missionary. He journeyed to Africa, discovered many things and led many Africans to Christ. Please, look up more about this guy. Inspiring stuff.

That's my list of favorite explorers. Someday, your friends will make a list of their favorite spiritual explorers. Maybe you'll be on that list. Maybe this week starts a lifetime of exploration.

-A fellow explorer

P.S. My plan is send this out every day for the next four weeks. (They won’t be this long.) If you don’t want to get it again, just reply and write “don’t send me any more e-mails Jack.” And you will never get it again, but it’s just a reminder for you to continually think about coming alongside your friends’ spiritual journeys.
